Being a hostess is a surefire way to drain yourself of energy. We held a dinner dance tonight at Great Bear Country Club for our members; we had a group of a little over 40 people. Things went incredibly well: the food was good, everybody was dancing the night away, and the students enjoyed themselves. Even though I was technically "working," I enjoyed myself, too. It's fun to make other people feel good about themselves, and I enjoy asking a student to dance and making him smile at the realization that he isn't as bad as he thinks. It's a good feeling, finding a lady who hasn't been asked to dance for a song or two and inviting her to join me on the floor. I love our members and enjoy spending time with them, so tonight was enjoyable for me as well. The only thing that's tough about it is that being so "up" and cheerful all night is physically exhausting. Talking, laughing, joking, pulling people onto the dance floor, making sure to keep everyone entertained and smiling for hours -- my body is sooo shot right now, my legs are tired, and I've got a fantastic headache. It's all worth it, though, 'cause I really do love my job. I couldn't ask for a better environment in which to work, or better people with whom and for whom to work. I am truly blessed to have found Studio West (thank God for Google!).
In other news...well, there isn't a whole lot going on in my life right now. I'm still looking for a house (haven't found a new one yet), still adapting to life here, and still loving my place of employment.
Kevin's moving back to New York next weekend. I know that it's where he wants to be, so I'm happy for him, but the thought of losing my brother and best friend is killing me. I'm trying not to feel sorry for myself, though, 'cause it's a waste of energy...easier said than done, but I'm working on it.
I haven't been to Long Island in two months, which is the longest amount of time that I've spent away. I miss everyone there like crazy, but I had to spread my visits out a bit 'cause the frequent trips were getting a bit costly for me. Hopefully I'll get out there soon.
I'm also going to be heading out to Boston in early November to visit Justin. I've never been to Boston, so I'm looking forward to it...plus, we're going to a Hanson concert while I'm there, so it'll be twice as awesome.
I *may* be heading out to Long Island in November, if sheduling and finances permit. I know it sounds ultra-cheesy, but I wanna go out there 'cause there are quite a few movie releases in November that I'm looking forward to, and just about all the people I've arranged to see them with are in New York. Rent is being released that month (Mike and I have been talking about that one for a while), and so is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Kevin's favorite book of the series, so he's looking forward to it, and Dave's a fan of the Harry Potter movies, too, and he started reading the books recently -- so I wanna see it with them). I'll also re-view Rent here in the Poconos (I'm taking my Mom for her birthday).
Okay, so...what else? Not much at the moment. I'm constantly looking ahead, which is a good thing, 'cause life flies by so quickly that these upcoming events end up here before I realize it. I could probably type on and on forever (I've been known to do that...), but it's been a long night and I'm tired. Until next time...

So. I finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince earlier this week, and I'm still somewhat shocked by the ending. I've been calling all my Rowling-reading friends, and we've discussed feelings/expectations/theories, but it'll take another couple of read-throughs for me, I think, before I have a solid idea of what's going on. Even then, J.K. Rowling always pulls something seemingly out of nowhere -- then, when I look back, I realize that I should have seen it coming all along. I guess that's my way of saying that none of my theories are likely to hold up and all of my predictions are quite likely to be incorrect. That's one of the things that I enjoy about the books, like life: their unpredictability.
Current mood: contemplative

Okay, this is a long survey...but fill it out, it you want. 1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before? graduate from college, write a novel, have a prison inmate for a pen pal 2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't make New Year's resolutions. I set standards for myself and try to keep them, but that's a year-round thing. 3. Did anyone close to you give birth? yeah, my friend Jessica had a baby this spring 4. Did anyone close to you die? not close to me, but someone that I cared about (Amanda's grandma) 5. What countries did you visit? none, unfortunately 6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004? a publisher, a copy of Elton John's album Honky Chateau, direction 7. What dates from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? April 16 (I met Hanson), July 7 (met Megan McCafferty), December18 (left Long Island)...there are a few more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I co-wrote a novel, I learned to ice skate 9. What was your biggest failure? losing touch with some people, not learning to play my acoustic guitar 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? just the usual cold here and there and a few pulled muscles from dance, nothing major 11. What was the best thing you bought? my bright-green 2001 Mustang 12. Whose behaviour merited celebration? Chris...he came back! 13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed? I'd rather not say for two reasons: 1) said person/people might read this and 2) I'm trying not to focus on past disappointments 14. Where did most of your money go? hm...to pay for a car when my old one wouldn't work anymore 15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? seeing Alanis Morissette and the Barenaked Ladies at Jones Beach with Mike and Beth 16. What song will always remind you of 2004? hm...maybe "So-Called Chaos" by Alanis Morissette 17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder? erm...neither, really b) thinner or fatter? I'd say about the same c) richer or poorer? hahaha...I'm working more hours 'cause I'm out of school, but I'm definitely not rich 18. What do you wish you'd done more of? spending time with my Long Island friends; I didn't realize how little time I'd have there 19. What do you wish you'd done less of? eating lol 20. How will you be spending Christmas? I spent Christmas Eve with my big Italian family and Christmas Day at home with my immediate family 21. Did you fall in love in 2004? nope 22. How many one-night stands? hm...lemme count...oh, yeah, none 23. What was your favourite TV programme? Gilmore Girls and Whose Line is it Anyway? (also Friends reruns on occasion) 24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? nope 25. What was the best book you read? I've read so many this year, but off the top of my head, I'd have to say Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, The Green Mile by Stephen King, The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler, and the Neon Genesis Evangelion Manga Series 26. What was your greatest musical discovery? um...I'd have to say Counting Crows (they've been around, but I only recently started listening) 27. What did you want and get? Gilmore Girls Season One on DVD (laugh if you want, but I love it) 28. What did you want and not get? to visit Frankie and have him cut my hair 29. What was your favourite film of this year? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (but Anchorman was really funny...) 30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I taught (student teaching at Floyd), went to my college classes, went to dance, then Mom and Ed took me out late that night (I know, not your typical twenty-first-birthday, but I'm definitely atypical lol) 31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? well, I was able to dance at Lynn's church once, but being able to dance in a worship-type setting more often would have been nice 32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004? I've never had a "concept"...I just wear whatever I feel like, whether it's old, ripped jeans and a T-shirt or a corset, skirt, and fishnet tights 33. What kept you sane? my Mom, Kevin, God, my journals 34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? ahm...Isaac Hanson, Jimmy Fallon, and a couple of older men-types (Colin Mochrie and George Clooney) 35. What political issue stirred you the most? war/reconstruction/presence of troops overseas 36. Who did you miss? anyone from Long Island, insert your name here 37. Who was the best new person you met? I'd have to say the kids that I subbed for...they taught me to be patient and showed me that not all kids are horrible adolescents...so many of them just need someone to listen to them, and I'm glad that I was able to, even if it was only for a short time 38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004: hm...I learned many lessons, but here are a couple of quotes that sum up about half of it: "The idea that somebody can complete you...it's a romantic idea...that there is such a thing as a 'soulmate'....But I've always felt that it's much more likely you'll meet the so-called 'one' when you realize that you're all right by yourself." ~ Ethan Hawke "The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool." ~ Almost Famous

Wow, it's been a really long time. I don't even have anything spectacular to say, I just don't want to keep my lj for the sole purpose of belonging to communities (though the communities DO rock). So...uh...what to say? I moved on Saturday, from Long Island to Monroe County, PA. I'm still adjusting. Not only is it a hell of a lot colder here (I'm a warm-weather person), but it's very isolated. I guess I should be glad that it's not as commercialized and crowded as Long Island, but now that I'm away from that, I really miss it. I miss living 5 minutes from a beach, being able to drive 6 minutes and get any kind of take-out I wanted, and living within 25 minutes of almost every one of my family members. It's lonely here. Maybe that'll change once I start working and meeting people. Time will tell, I guess. In the meantime...I'd better get unpacking.

I'm in the mood to update, even though I don't have much to say. It's just that I haven't written in this journal for way too long, so here I am. Hm...what's been going on in my life? Not much that you'd find interesting, most likely. However, since this is my site, I'll ramble on endlessly 'cause I feel like it. I'm realizing that I'm trapped in adolescence in many ways. The little ups and downs of life, confusions, romantic indecisions, interpersonal conflicts, stresses, resentments, kindnesses, affections...I still don't have a firm grasp on all of that. Will I ever really grow up? Do I really want to? I guess I'm just realizing that I really don't know what I want out of life. I keep trying to remind myself that that doesn't really matter, 'cause I should be more concerned with what God wants than what I want, but it's hard 'cause, deep down, I'm a selfish person and want to look out for myself. I need to trust that God knows what's best, not just for me, but for everyone and everything involved in His grand master plan. I've been working for a local inventory company (actually, it's a national company, but my branch is ten minutes from home). It's tedious but not difficult, and I get to work in a different place every day, so at least I get a change of scene. Last night we worked a CompUSA. Each of us was assigned a "buddy"...at least, that's what I was told by Justin, who was mine. He helped me out a lot, and it was cool to have someone to talk to while I was working. Usually, we're not allowed to do that, but since he wasn't an employee of RGIS, I didn't get in trouble. :0) Hm...what else is new in my life? Not much of interest, I'm sure. I'm currently writing my first novel (with Mike). It's a lot harder than you'd think, and the pain of finding a publisher can get discouraging, but we're still working on it -- and working on it, and working on it... I've been able to catch up on my summer reading a little bit, and it's carried over into the fall. I'm currently reading The Red Tent while finishing Nothing Feels Good. I've also begun Moby Dick and The Princess Bride and have been enjoying The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot on more than one occasion. Any book recommendations for me? Well, I'm gonna sign off for now. My laptop's battery is about to die, and I'm too lazy to plug it in. Hopefully my next update will be soon -- and more interesting than this one! (Maybe I'll use less dashes, too -- I'm starting to feel like Emily Dickinson!)

Love Song. A Minute Without You. If Only. Strong Enough To Break. Soldier. (those are always subject to change...) People that still say hanson are girls?: are usually guys who can't understand that taylor is NOT a girl, he's a metrosexual lol Hanson Live?: I've heard the term "eargasm" before...I think that about sums it up...it's not sexual, it's sheer bliss for your auditory system There latest CD underneath?: I'm so proud of them and happy for them that they were able to make it happen on their own like that This Quiz so far?: it's okay...I feel like an obsessive freak, though...

Okay...I don't really have much to say. Just thought I'd get that out in the open.
Hm...I'm going to Mom's company picnic today, but not planning on staying the whole time. I know the people there, but not well enough to spend a few hours with them. Plus, I have to dance in a show tonight and need to be in Port Jeff by 4:30. I'm so tired that even the idea of performing holds minor appeal today. Oh, well, I'll give it my all as usual and grin widely and hope that the audience doesn't pick up on my exhaustion. Chris will be missed (he's in Pennsylvania and can't perform with us); he usually picks up my energy level, too. :0(
Anyway...I've gotta go finish some writing and call Mike. I'll try to post again when I'm feeling a little more energetic.

Wow...I cannot believe that summer's almost over! I mean, it's not like I have to go back to school right away, but I DO have to be in a school just about every day for work, you know? It's almost the same thing. I'm really bored right now. I have a dance rehearsal in a little while for a performance that we're doing at a Port Jefferson arts committee thing, but until then, I don't have much to do. It's been a nice, relaxing day, and I'm not looking forward to working so late tonight. In addition to that, I can't seem to turn off my mind over the past few days, even though I've been trying to. I'm weird like that, I guess. Hm...maybe I can distract myself by going upstairs and finishing Rain Man. I started watching it a couple of days ago but haven't gotten to the end yet...

I have developed a new-found respect for authors. I mean, sure, I've always been one to read a great book and admire a writer's talent, but now I'm beginning to come to an awareness of just how much work goes into the publication of a book. It's insane. I spent about two hours last night working my way through two hundred pages' worth of publishing companies, trying to figure out which ones would even read our query and give it thirty seconds' worth of consideration and thought. Then I had to make sure that they accepted unagented submissions, 'cause we sure as hell don't have an agent. I started chapter one last night, Mike e-mailed me his work on chapter two...today I have to finish chapter one and write our query. I also have to type up a legible list of all the publishers that I found yesterday (thirty-five, I believe, was the total). Well, I'm going to get to work. Now that I've had two cups of coffee, I feel slightly more prepared to deal with the day. By the way, my inmate friend hasn't written back in about two weeks. I guess the fact that I steered the friendship away from romantic inclinations wasn't to his liking? He seemed a little colder after I hinted at the fact that I don't want to be the "special someone" that he's always writing about and hoping he'll find. Or maybe he's just busy. Who knows? Oh, well, I've got enough to keep me busy in the meantime. Here's an appropriate lyric to end this entry -- "Strong Enough to Break," by Hanson: I don't feel myself today, just a figure in a big Monopoly game. Struggle is the price you pay; you get just enough just to give it away. I'm sinking but I'm floating away. Throw me a line so I can anchor my pain. The fabric is about to fray...Things keep coming and I keep wondering. I start feeling the walls close in. Things keep coming and I keep stumbling. I start feeling strong enough to break.

Part Two...
~What Is Your Opinion Of The Following~ 271. Eminem: a whole lotta angst for someone who's not a teen 272. Virgins: er...i'm a dork, so i think of stuff like sacrifices in ancient nations and "to the virgins, to make much of time" 273. God: my opinion of Him doesn't matter...He's so much bigger and more powerful than me (though I do believe in Him, obviously, and will follow His will for my life) 274. The Osbournes: slighly amusing 275. Reality TV: way too prevalent 276. J.Lo: sings too much about being real 277. Religion: i hate labels, so i hate saying that I'm a Christian...people judge me for the way that the other Christians (most of them stuuupid) act 278. Emo music: the book I'm reading, Nothing Feels Good, is about the "emo movement" (if you can call it that)...i enjoy it (the book and the music) 279. Valentine's Day: erm...it's okay, i guess...but it's becoming way too commercialized for me...its only redeeming quality are those little chalky-sugary hearts 280. Obesity: not to be mean, but...this is considered a disease now? what the hell's up with that? i can understand other diseases that factor in and help cause it, but in some people's cases, it's just a lack of self-control 287. Pre-marital sex: verrry controversial...but i think i agree with bert's pov on this one (see heartsafire.info for more...) 288. Terrorism: i am so sick of hearing about this now when nothing's happening here...the government should have been more concerned with this three years ago! 289. Pornography: i'm not into it and don't really see the basis of its appeal...if you need sex that badly, there's gotta be someone desperate enough to do it with you, right? 290. Fortune tellers: oh, what was that movie? with the fortune-teller with the third nipple? ... anyway...i think that most of them are fake, but they can have their real channeling moments (like madame trelawney) 291. Threesomes: never participated in one...and as of right now, i don't really have a desire to do so... 292. Prostitution: easy money, lying in a bed...just as good they never see the hate that's in your head (that's from les miserables) 293. Politics: hm...i'm a registered voter but haven't voted yet...i don't like political discussions 'cause people get so worked up over the stupidest things; then the conversation gets hostile 294. Country music: i'm not a big fan, but some of it's okay, i guess 295. George W. Bush: again, i'm not a big fan...i saw this the other day and thought it was funny... no more bu--sh-- (hehehe) 296. Cloning: scary...the world would be a much worse place if there were two of me... 297. Britney's boobs: i don't really think about them...real or fake, i still don't like her 298. Gas prices in America: way too high, especially with my new car, which uses more gas ~Name Game~ What Do You Think Of When You Hear These Common Names?. 299. Jack: sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean...and so, betwixt them both, you see, they licked the platter clean (rhyme from my childhood) 300. Tiffany: i think my aunt vicky wanted to look like her in the '80s lol 301. Ben: affleck 302. Maria: mena 304. Nicole: my cousin 305. Amy: myers...argh 306. Adam: baumgartner 307. Richard: the grandfather from gilmore girls (edward herrmann) 308. Justin: ellis, bonacci, savi 309. Arnold: that football-head-shaped kid from nickelodeon 310. Tom: my cousin 311. Okay, quick disclaimer: I nabbed my background picture from hanson.net. If you want it, it's under one of the summer shows -- Boston, I think. Unfortunately, there weren't any pictures posted from the show I saw at Irving Plaza, but it's okay 'cause this one works. 'Kay, I'm done for now...

Hm...I'm not sure what I'm posting about, but I feel kinda bad 'cause I've been neglecting my LJ lately. I use my xanga site more often for some reason, and I've forgotten about this one. What's happened since the last time I wrote in here? I saw the Alanis Morissette & Barenaked Ladies concert, and it was amazing. One of the best concerts that I've ever been too, and that's saying a lot, considering the fact that I've seen Hanson five times. Alanis's voice is even more powerful live than recorded, and the Barenaked Ladies not only sound awesome but are also hilarious. I don't think I've ever laughed that much at a concert before. I bought a new car last week...well, it's not BRAND-new, it's used, but it's new to me. It's a 2001 Ford Mustang (bright, kelly green, very cute). I love it. Now I just need a job for the rest of the summer...I've been looking for something for weeks and haven't had any success yet, unfortunately. I saw a movie on Friday with Mike (The Village). I'd strongly recommend it, for those of you who haven't seen it yet. I NEVER would have seen that ending coming! We dissected the movie for the entire ride home, and I'm sure that we'd pick up more if we saw it a second time. Very cool. I went to the beach on Saturday with Dave and a bunch of his friends (I knew some of them, too, so that was cool). It was great, and I had an awesome time, but I'm now very harshly sunburned. My back is covered in shades of pink and fuschia, and it's none too enjoyable. Finding a comfortable sleeping position is tricky. Kevin's away this week. He's with the Grace youth group at Kingdom Bound. I'm very jealous of him, 'cause I've always wanted to go to one of those festivals, plus I miss him already and he's not coming home till sometime Thursday. With no job and no Kevin, I'm gonna be bored out of my mind this week. Oh, well, I picked up James Joyce's Ulysses from the library this week...maybe I'll finish all 800 pages by the time he gets back. Then I'll move on to Les Miserables or Paradise Lost or something else of epic proportions (epic. paradise lost. hehehe). Okay, now I'm just getting stupid, so I'm gonna stop writing for now. More later...

Last night was amazing. I posted a slightly lengthy review in my xanga (I'm elaboratelives over there if you wanna check it out, or just click on the "my website" link), so I'll try to make this one a little shorter. The concert was amazing. I stood on the balcony and could see really well; it was perfect. I met Ben Jelen after the concert and asked him to sign my CD sleeve. He asked for my name, then leaned forward, pushed his hair out of his face, and asked shyly, "With a K, right?" Usually I get, "Is that with a y or an ie?" but of course he's different. ;0) I also have other slightly (okay, very) exciting news: I'm going to the Alanis Morissette and Barenaked Ladies concert tomorrow night with Mike and his friend Beth, and we'll be sitting in the VIP box. I was going to buy a ticket to the show and go by myself, but I'm so glad that I didn't, 'cause this will be so much more fun! I cannot wait! Okay, enough exclamation points for one morning...I'm gonna go do something else now. Until next time...
